First settled in 1680, Needham’s land was obtained from tribal leader William Nehoiden in exchange for some cash, corn and hunting/fishing land by Newton’s Hemlock Gorge on the Charles River. Back then there were no replacement windows available in Needham, otherwise they would have also been part of the deal.
Never particularly good farm land, Needham’s economic development was stimulated by the arrival of immigrants from the textile-intensive English Midlands, who brought their skills with them and started up knitting operations. Knitting was important to Needham’s economy well into the 20th century, when a growing electronics industry along Rte. 128 contributed to later growth. Interestingly, the landfill for Boston’s Back Bay came from the area in Needham where Rte. 128 was built.
